Illumination: 2024 Project Red Ribbon

City Hall and Springer Market Square will be lit up red for MADD Canada's Red Ribbon Project. MADD Canada’s red ribbon is a small but powerful symbol of the wearer’s commitment to sober driving and a tribute to victims and survivors of impaired driving. Throughout November and December, MADD Canada will distribute millions of ribbons for Canadians to wear.

Illumination: Shine the Light on Woman Abuse

City Hall and Springer Market Square will be lit up purple for the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse Campaign. For the entire month of November, the London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC) celebrates the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign. The goals of the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign are to show abused women and girls that Canadians from sea to sea to sea, support them in their quest to live a life free from violence and abuse.

City Hall and Springer Market Square will be lit up blue for Eczema Awareness Month. Eczema Society of Canada (ESC) is dedicated to meeting the needs of those suffering with eczema through support, education, raising awareness, advocating for patients, and ongoing research activities.

Illumination: Indigenous Veterans Day

Since 1994, Indigenous Veterans Day has been recognized on November 8. The day honours Indigenous Veterans who have served in Canada’s military and tonight, in honour of that, City Hall will be illuminated in red.

Illumination: Remembrance Day

City Hall will be illuminated red and white to commemorate the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Remembrance Day is a time for Canadians to pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace.

9:15 AM| Cross of Sacrifice Cenotaph in McDonald Park (located near Murney Tower, on King St. at the foot of George St).

Join us to remember and honour on Remembrance Day.  There are different ways:

  • Observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. 
  • Attend the Civic Ceremony in person 
  • Purchase a wreath or poppy from the Royal Canadian Legion. To order a wreath, please call at 613-544-5522.

Illumination: Lung Cancer Awareness Month

City Hall will be lit up for Lung Cancer Awareness Month. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, an important time for raising awareness about the disease that affects a significant number of Canadians. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Canada, with more than 32,000 new cases diagnosed every year. Despite advancements in early detection and treatment, lung cancer continues to disproportionately affect underserved populations and those living in rural areas. Awareness and education are critical in saving lives and addressing the stigma that often surrounds this disease.

Illumination: World Diabetes Day

City Hall and Springer Market Square will be lit up blue for World Diabetes Day. World Diabetes Day is led by the International Diabetes Federation. Type 2 diabetes is a largely preventable and treatable disease which is rapidly increasing in numbers worldwide. Type 1 diabetes is not preventable but can be managed with insulin injections.

Illumination: World Prematurity Day

City Hall and Springer Market Square will be lit up purple for World Prematurity Day. Over 200 babies are admitted to the NICU at Kingston Health Sciences Centre each year.  One in 10 babies worldwide are born premature.  The Kingston Mighty Preemies bring awareness and celebrate these tiniest miracles in the Kingston Area.  On World Prematurity Day, the Kingston Mighty Preemies gather in front of City Hall to hear inspirational and heart-warming stories of premature babies, then they celebrate at Kingston General Hospital with light refreshments and lighting the NICU purple.

Illumination: World Prematurity Day

City Hall and Springer Market Square will be lit up purple for World Prematurity Day. The Canadian Premature Babies Foundation (CPBF) is a parent-led charitable organization aimed to raise public awareness about prematurity and provide support and education for families of premature babies. This is an annual event to honour premature babies their families and caregivers.

Illumination: Transgender Day of Remembrance

12:00 AM| City Hall

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day to remember those killed by transphobic violence. In commemoration of the day and those lost to transphobia, flags at City Hall will be lowered to half-mast for the day and City Hall will be illuminated in pink, white and blue.

The City of Kingston acknowledges that we are on the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and the Huron-Wendat, and thanks these nations for their care and stewardship over this shared land.

Today, the City is committed to working with Indigenous peoples and all residents to pursue a united path of reconciliation.
