Flag raising: Emancipation Day

12:00 AM| City Hall

The Black Liberation Flag will be flown in Confederation Park in celebration of Emancipation Day. Emancipation Day is set aside to recognize the Slavery Abolition Act (1833) that resulted in the beginning of the end of slavery in the British Empire (which included Canada). In addition, the United Nations General Assembly has declared the last ten years ending in 2024 as the International Decade for People of African descent. Notably, the Canadian Federal government announced an extension of the decade to 2028 as it has committed to engaging with Black communities in Canada.
